As Spring starts to slowly come our way, what better time to start thinking about freshening things up? Have you been using the same old skin care products and need to boost up your beauty care? Well you're in luck because in the coming weeks I am going to begin a series to help you create your perfect skin care routine! In the mean time, one product to consider adding into your every day routine is Vitamin C!
I apply a Vitamin C serum every morning before my moisturizer and sunscreen and love not only the benefits it gives my skin, but also the way my skin has a healthy, bright glow. I'm sure you have heard at some point that Vitamin C is good for you, so read on if you want to learn why!
What's the deal with Vitamin C?
Daily topical use of vitamin C has been proven to be one of the top ingredients to help slow down the appearance of aging, suppress free radical activity, and brighten complexions. I'm sure one of your first questions are, what the heck are free radicals?
Free radicals consist of atoms with unpaired electrons. These unpaired electrons are a result of environmental damage from toxins and sun exposure. When free radicals react with DNA or the membranes of cells, they cause cell death or abnormal cell function. When these abnormal or damaged cells reproduce, this is what causes the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, lost elasticity in the skin and pigmentation issues. This leads us to how Vitamin C can help...
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. A substance that prevents the cellular damage caused by free radicals and actually preserves cell integrity. This antioxidant effect helps protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation and the aging effects of sunlight exposure (it does not replace SPF use!). When Vitamin C is used daily to protect the skin, collagen production is increased. This helps prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, along with supporting blood vessels which carry oxygen and nutrients to the skin. When the skin is receiving proper nutrients and oxygen, it will appear brighter, healthier, and smoother!
The next important part of topical Vitamin C use is what type of product you are using. When incorporating Vitamin C into your daily regimen, it is best to use a high potency, well-formulated product to experience visible results. Avoid over-the-counter products that have very low percentages of active ingredients. When shopping, look for Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) on the label.

- Just a tip: If Ascorbic Acid is listed at the bottom of the ingredient list on your product, it's probably only acting as a preservative and the product does not contain enough of the ingredient to provide you with benefits.

Click the photo to check out the serum I use every day! It's the Glo Professional Vitamin C 15% serum. I apply it right after my toner and let it completely soak into the skin before applying any other products. This serum is not "greasy" or "oily" at all! It soaks completely into the skin, making it perfect for all skin types!
